Evicted 101-year-old Detroiter going homePost a Comment
DETROIT (AP) — A 101-year-old Detroit woman who was evicted from her foreclosed house is ready to move back in.
Texana Hollis is expected on Wednesday to return to the home that she lived in for about 60 years.
Detroit Free Press columnist Mitch Albom and his charity S.A.Y. Detroit helped to renovate Hollis’ house. The author’s charity bought it from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to fix it up.
Hollis was evicted in September and her belongings placed outside after her son failed to pay property taxes linked to a reverse mortgage, and HUD foreclosed. Two days later, the department said she could return.
That didn’t happen, though, because HUD determined the home was unsanitary and unsafe.
