Description:

Charles H. WRIGHT ACADEMY of Arts and Science opened in August 2002 on a five-acre site in the northwest community of Detroit. Our curriculum here at WRIGHT ACADEMY places emphasizes on English Language Arts, Mathematics, Reading, Social Studies, Computer Technology Career Exploration, Performing Arts and Health/Physical Education.

Our highly trained professional staff provide an academically challenging and robust curriculum of instruction that is aligned with state and national standards. Charles H. Wright Academy of Arts and Science was the only school to receive the Michigan Distinguished School Award in 2002.

The 6+1 Writing Traits writing program supplements the curriculum. Additionally, we are fully engaged with implementing strategies and instruction for student achievement in Reading, Mathematics and Science for grades 3 and 4. The newest support for the Mathematics curriculum has been launched to another level with our Mathematics Coach who provides additional support and training as needed to impact student learning and student achievement.
We have integrated and enhanced our core subjects with scoring studentв’s writing by using writing rubrics to identify the use of formative and summative assessments, thus the inclusion of DPS-initiated assessment and benchmark with DIBELS/BURST, Accelerated Reading and Mathematics assessment have had a tremendous impact of student achievement and integrating technology into our classroom instruction with the support of the Technology Coach.

We also offer numerous academic clubs and service organizations complement the academics and scholarly focus. These include the Science Club, Math Club, Joyful Sounds, Performing Arts Troupe, Conflict and Peer Mediation Intervention, Computer Enrichment, Media Resource Center and the Principalв’s List.

Finally, we are uniquely fortunate to have a on-site health center with a nurse staffed to meet the needs of our medically challenged students and any who would require specific attention that is remedied with the support of this medical professional.

The classrooms are equipped with a secured television and the capacity to link in with our in-house close circuit television station, Channel 83. A student run daily telecast airs daily at 7:45 a.m. called "In the Wright News." Additionally, the television has the capacity to offer a platform on DVD/VHS technology. The computer stations provide a minimum of four computers for student use to complete teacher directed tasks and /or student discovery and exploration. A printer and scanner are also at the disposal of the students and teacher.

Our specialized programs are designed to instill in all students the desire for achievement and lifelong learning. We have either met or exceeded the District and the State of Michigan Achievement standards on the MEAP. Student honors and award assemblies are held each card marking period. Students also receive recommendation for "Student of the Month" and are recognized publicly. We have an ongoing partnership with Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History with all students and staff having memberships that offer enriching on-site and off-site learning opportunities.

The students, staff and faculty of Charles H. Wright Academy of Arts and Science has been selected for the past five years as a Demonstration and a Model school for the Detroit Public Schools numerous times. Other professionals, educators, and parent organizations have visited the school for the purposes of observation and on-site training in various academic disciplines and administration shadowing for leadership best practices. Our Parent-Teacher Group meetings are conducted monthly, are well attended, and always showcase student presentations and performances. Finally, we are visited twice weekly by the Reading Corp which is a reading initiative for students in preschool and kindergarten to reinforce reading to raise the bar with the "Wright Stars", the bright stars of tomorrow.
